How Much Extra Backing/Batting?

That’s up to you. I need at least 4-6 inches extra on two opposing sides so the quilt can be loaded correctly. If the back is too small, issues can crop up while the quilt “shrinks in on itself” during the quilting process. More is better!

Thread

I provide all threads and have a vast inventory. If there is a specialty thread you would like let's talk about what would look best in your quilt. I typically only use Glide or So Fine! because they are low lint and look great in the quilt.

Turn Around Time

Turnaround time depends on the season. Christmas and Grad/Wedding seasons are busier so plan ahead for those. Rush orders can be requested for an additional charge. Normally I'm about three to four months out.

Pressing the Back/Top

I can smooth most of those pesky backing wrinkles out once I load onto the frame. Make sure your top is pressed well to include those seams on the back. And let's face it, once you fold it for about 10 seconds, wrinkles always seem to want to show their heads again. Another consideration for you is trimming stray threads on the back of your top if you have a white/light fabric.

Prewashing

NEVER prewash a completed top. But, you can (and should) prewash the backing. It needles better, means no bleeding, and will already be preshrunk when washing is necessary in the future. However, please do not use fabric softener in the wash or dryer cycles. This prevents me from getting out wrinkles and the smell affects one of my dogs.

Batting Availability

I have batting! Prices vary on type (cotton, blend, wool, bamboo) and manufacturer (Dream, Hobbs, Stitch in Time). My prices are very (very) competitive. The thing to remember about batt is how it feels to the hand (drape, softness, bend, thickness) is how it's going to behave in your quilt. If you bring your own please be kind to your quilt and use quality batting. The difference in a good batt and a cheap batt is about $20 on a queen-sized quilt. Is your quilt worth it?
